When Is the Best Time to Replace a Roof?

Sometimes you don’t have a choice for when to replace your roof, but there are definitely times when you may get the opportunity to schedule a roof replacement in advance. In those cases, when is the best time to replace a roof? Is there a “best time?” Let’s take a look.

What's the Best Season to Replace a Roof?

Fall is the best time to replace your roof. The cooler temperatures (compared to summer) make for a more comfortable time for replacement, especially for roof installers (though we can and do replace roofs year round). The same is more or less true for springtime.

The lower humidity in fall is preferable as well. It provides a better environment for the shingles to seal effectively. During the summer, especially in hot southern climates, the heat adds a bit of complication that isn’t there during the fall months.

With that said, summer is the most popular season for roof replacement. Even though it’s hotter, there tends to be longer stretches of clear weather along with additional daylight hours. Just be aware that demand is very high in the summer, which can impact scheduling and availability.

What about winter? It’s the least popular season for roof replacement by far. While we still do roof replacements during winter months, it’s definitely less common. This can be a good thing in certain situations, though. Fewer roofing projects often means more availability.

What's the Best Month to Replace Your Roof?

October is the best month to replace your roof. Remember that a lot of homeowners will replace their roofs during the summer. As we move into fall, demand will start to decline and the weather will get milder. This makes October a fantastic time to get your roof replaced.

Just keep in mind – there’s really no “bad” time to get your roof replaced if you’re in need of a replacement. Our crews are 100% willing and capable of doing a roof replacement at any time as long as the weather cooperates.

Do Roof Replacement Costs Change by Season?

This depends on the roofing company you work with. Some roofing companies definitely adjust their prices to account for demand. This means that their prices are likely highest in the summer and decline during spring, fall, and summer months.

Whether or not these price fluctuations impact you is a different story, though. If you’re filing an insurance claim for your roof replacement, the most you’ll ever have to pay out of pocket is your deductible. That assumes your claim is approved, of course.

If that’s the case, it doesn’t really matter what the roofing company is charging at the time. It’s the same as why you shouldn’t shop around for the best price on a roof replacement when insurance is paying.

If you’re paying out of pocket, or getting financing for your new roof, then price fluctuations will definitely matter. Don’t be afraid to ask your roofing company how the price they’re giving you compares to the price they’d give you in a different season. An honest roofing company will give you an honest answer.

If prices are higher at the time, it may be possible to schedule your roof replacement for a different season to get a better deal. That’s something you can negotiate with the roofing company.
