What is an Assignment of Benefits (AOB)?

In the state of Florida, licensed public adjusters cannot enter into a contract to do both public adjusting and construction work for the same property (Florida Statute 626.8795). This is why an Assignment of Benefits may be used. An A.O.B (AOB). helps to expedite the process of communication with your insurance company on matters regarding your claim. The A.O.B. (AOB) also allows the contractor to be listed as a payee on the insurance company check, along with the homeowner and their mortgage company. For example, doctors require you to sign an Assignment of Benefits when you do business with them. This allows the doctors to communicate with and collect money directly from your insurance company, without complicating the process by going through you every single time. This is the same situation as signing an A.O.B. with a doctor. You still have the right to contact your insurance company to ask questions, and remain informed on the progress of your claim.

Will filing a claim raise my rates?

The answer to this question is not a definitive, clear-cut answer. Filing homeowners insurance claims may or may not raise your rates, it depends on the type of claim, how big or small the damage is and how many claims you've filed in the past. Due to this, it is hard to determine just how much your insurance rates may rise; if at all. Do not hesitate to file a claim because you are afraid your insurance rates will go up. Waiting to file a claim may only make the issue or damage much worse in the long run. It is suggested to file claims for bigger damages and catastrophic events. If you have any further questions, call your insurance company and inquire about when to file a claim.
